The author

Jorge Toledo

Jorge has been fascinated by the Second World War since he was nine years old, when he watched The World at War documentary series, narrated in Portuguese by Walmor Chagas for TV Globo, in 1975. Over the following decades he built an extensive library on the subject. In 2005 he met Andrea Szyfer and her husband, Luciano — Andrea was a coworker at the time — and learned that her grandmother, Dona Sara, was a survivor of the Auschwitz extermination camp.

The first of seven interview sessions with Dona Sara took place on March 4, 2006, a sunny Saturday, in the Bom Retiro neighborhood of São Paulo, in the apartment where she lived with her husband, Mr. Jacó. Nearly seven hours were recorded — at times, when the emotion was too great, Dona Sara switched from Portuguese to Yiddish, and her son, Herman Szyfer, helped as interpreter.

The book grew out of years of historical research combined with those interviews. As Jorge writes in the prologue, he makes no claim to being the author of a faithful biography or a strict historical record: he wove historical facts together with Dona Sara’s own account, adding what can reasonably be supposed to have happened, to bring sharper focus to the daily life of someone who survived the Holocaust — what he calls “biographical fiction.”

“With that, I leave here my thanks and my sincere, deep tribute to Dona Sara, to Mr. Jacó, to Mr. Herman, to my friend Andrea, and to her entire family, for the trust they placed in me.” Jorge Toledo

Preface — “A book that changes lives”

“Books change lives because they not only inform us but make us live someone else’s experience. […] Knowing about the Holocaust is not enough; you must feel the horror to truly understand. This book delivers that. It’s harsh but necessary. […] He didn’t just write a book—he wrote a book that will change lives.”

An excerpt from the book

Sara’s real name was Szajndla. The name, of Polish origin, was difficult for many, especially Brazilians, to pronounce, which likely led to her being called Sara. Her parents, Hersz and Chana Figelska, were Polish Jews.

[…]

Sadly, the memories Sara carried from her childhood and adolescence were few and tinged with sorrow. The Second World War swept away much of her early life. She was only 19 years old when everything changed.
